Rutgers University unveiled a new tomato variety called the "Scarlet Sunrise."

The tomato was developed by Rutgers researchers Peter Nitzsche and Tom Orton. It is sweet and crack-proof, with a golden hue and a reddish blush.

A tasting was offered Wednesday at the university’s Clifford E. and Melda C. Snyder Research and Extension Farm in Pittstown, N.J.

Its yearslong development has paid off and the university is currently seeking seed partnerships with commercial growers, with the eventual goal of reaching a wider audience.
