Attorney General William Tong visited Greenwich Town Hall Monday to speak with seniors, reminding them how to stay safe from scammers.
Tong encourages older adults not to pick up the phone from numbers they don't recognize.
If someone does pick up the phone, they should not stay on for long.
Other tips Tong mentioned including not sending or wiring money.
He also suggests seniors and their families create a code word that can be used during an emergency.
Tong says social media has made it easer for people to be scammed and for scammers to find potential targets.
"Most of us have an account even if you don't monitor it all the time. And even if none of that is true, your love ones do. And they are talking about you right. They're talking about the last birthday party they went to. They're talking about someone they lost in their family. They're talking about a major milestone," he says.
Elder abuse is only reported 1 out of 23 times.
The Office of the Attorney General and Coalition for Elder Justice in Connecticut launched Elder Justice Hotline in 2021 to help older adults in Connecticut seek information, assistance, and justice.
