A Hammonton police sergeant was indicted on charges, including official misconduct and theft after prosecutors said he stole narcotics from the department’s evidence room.

Prosecutors said Robert Zbikowski, 47, of Hammonton, used his position as evidence custodian to steal drugs stored in the Hammonton Police Department evidence room. He was indicted April 1 and has since been suspended from the department.

Authorities said the investigation began in February 2024 after members of the Hammonton Police Department notified the prosecutor’s office that Zbikowski had failed a routine drug screen.

Investigators said that from October 2023 until his suspension in February 2024, Zbikowski tampered with numerous bags of suspected narcotics in the evidence room.

During an audit, authorities found multiple bags of suspected methamphetamine and oxycodone had been tampered with or were missing entirely.

The case was investigated by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards and Accountability Unit and the Hammonton Police Department.

Zbikowski is also charged with official misconduct, pattern of official misconduct, theft, tampering with physical evidence and obstruction, according to the prosecutor.
