A man who stepped in to stop pit bulls from fighting has died after the dogs turned and mauled him.
Newark police officers responded to a call about a man who was attacked by three pit bulls at approximately 8:26 p.m. in Georgia King Village.
Police say the man intervened after seeing the dogs fighting, then they turned their attention to him and attacked.
The victim initially escaped the dogs, but lost consciousness after being bitten.
He was pronounced dead around 9 p.m.
Police say the dogs belong to someone the man knew, and that animal control was called to the scene.
