State lawmakers recently advanced legislation on May 4 that would establish the Task Force on Higher Education Governance and Funding.

Bill A1326 is sponsored by Assemblyman Cody Miller and Assemblywomen Linda Carter and Verlina Reynolds-Jackson.

This task force would be comprised of 13 members who would be responsible for reviewing the ability of New Jersey’s various colleges and universities and the current challenges facing them.

They will conduct in-depth examinations of each institution’s organizational structure as well as study oversight costs and the impact on students. Lawmakers hope this effort will lead to more transparency and accountability.

Now that the bill has passed the state Assembly, it will move over to state Senate for consideration and possible approval before being presented to Gov. Mikie Sherrill for final say.
