Sen. Richard Blumenthal warned Sacred Heart University students Tuesday about the dangers of sports betting.
The discussion comes as underage gambling continues to increase for people under 21.
Blumenthal says the industry needs oversight to protect young people because it it constantly pushes them to place bets. He adds that the industry is opposed to making any changes that would help people become more informed betters.
Blumenthal says that students should educate themselves about the negative aspects of betting.
"My advice to everyone especially young people is to learn more about the industry and how their technology, their tactics are designed to exploit weaknesses. And in literally in seconds they can promote and pitch another bet especially if people are losing. They don't want more bets from winners, they want to promote bets to people who are losing," he says.
In February, a Sacred Heart poll found that over half of respondents were concerned about the effects and prevalence of gambling advertisements on young people.
