Security increasing on LIRR and around Madison Square Garden before game 3 of the NBA Finals
According to the NYPD, only people with a valid reason to be in the area, including game ticket holders, train passengers, credentialed personnel, employees and local residents will be allowed through security checkpoints.

Fans heading into New York City for tonight’s highly anticipated game at Madison Square Garden should expect a heavy security presence both on their trip in and around the arena.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed to News 12 that police officers will be assigned to every Long Island Railroad train serving fans traveling to and from the game. Officials say the heightened security measures are being implemented because of the excitement surrounding the event and because President Donald Trump is expected to attend.
Once fans arrive at Penn Station, they will encounter extensive security operations. Photos taken along Seventh Avenue from Madison Square Garden toward Times Square show a significant law enforcement presence throughout the area.
Security will be especially tight around the Garden between West 30th and West 35th streets and between Sixth and Seventh avenues. According to the NYPD, only people with a valid reason to be in the area, including game ticket holders, train passengers, credentialed personnel, employees and local residents will be allowed through security checkpoints.
Long Island fans attending the game will have five different security checkpoints available to access the venue. Authorities are also urging anyone who is not attending the game to avoid the area if possible.
Despite the increased security measures and expected crowds, officials say rail service will continue operating normally.
“This security plan will not impact rail service at Penn Station. We highly encourage the public to use mass transit,” said Matt McCool of the U.S. Secret Service.
Many fans say they support the additional precautions.
“I saw they blocked off a lot of MSG, so that’s probably going to be difficult for sure,” said Lindenhurst resident James Apuzzo. “Safety for everyone is the best thing. There’s no reason why police should not be on the train, especially when things get rowdy.”
For travelers returning to Long Island after the game, officials recommend using Moynihan Train Hall to avoid crowds at Penn Station. The Long Island Rail Road is also encouraging riders to check train schedules before traveling, as stations are expected to see heavier-than-normal traffic throughout the evening.
