Brookfield police are warning residents about a scam where people receive packages they never ordered.

It's called "brushing."

Police say some shipments are done to create fake online reviews, but some contain electronic devices that could pose a cybersecurity risk.

They say that if plugged into a computer, the malware could expose personal information.

People are urged not to plug in any unknown or unsolicited devices into a computer or electronic device. It's recommended that people also verify the sender before they open any unexpected package.

Anyone who does connect an unknown device to a computer should disconnect it and contact an IT professional.
