HEAT ALERT: The worst of the heat expected for Thursday and Friday

It hasn't been this hot in 60 years. Widespread triple-digit heat and harsh humidity thrust New Jersey to dangerous depths. Heat is the No. 1 weather-related killer year in and year out. Check on friends, family and elderly neighbors. Take advantage of cooling centers.

This combination of heat and humidity will make it feel like 110 to 115 degrees tomorrow and linger into Saturday. Tomorrow's forecast could be the hottest it's been in 60 years.

It can't be said enough. Please be extra cautious in this potentially deadly air mass. Even nighttime lows are going to be uncomfortably hot and humid. Please take advantage of cooling centers if you do not have access to air conditioning or your air conditioning isn't working properly. Check on elderly neighbors and family members.

Isolated storms are possible Friday afternoon and late on the Fourth of July. The better opportunity for storms, unfortunately, looks to be Saturday evening, especially in the northern half of the state. This rain-storm threat could hinder Fourth of July fireworks scheduled for that evening around 9 p.m. We will have to see how the pattern evolves. It will not break the heat. In fact, if it rains, yes, the temperatures will come down briefly, but the humidity will shoot up even more, making it feel like a rainforest.

The six-day heat wave is expected to break on Monday, but the temperatures look to remain above average for the next 10 days.
