New project uses QR Codes and AI to provide latest information about Downtown Stamford
The program does not require an app to be downloaded, or personal information to be shared.
A new program called "Hello Lamp Post" in Downtown Stamford is using QR codes around the neighborhood, along with AI, to provide up-to-the-minute information to people in the area.
"We're always trying to improve the way that we communicate with stakeholders in downtown," said Michael Moore, the president of Stamford Downtown.
The QR codes are in a variety of public places, including planters outside restaurants, benches in parks and brochures at the train station.
Scanning one with a phone camera immediately brings up the program.
"We're trying to bring (the information) to the consumer," said Moore. "Anyone with a phone can use it, and that's why we think it's so valuable - because everybody has a phone."
"I feel like after COVID, everybody uses QR codes," agreed Stamford resident Paola Vargas, who said she was a fan of the program's convenience.
Just like other chatbots, the program is able to answer questions about topics including where to get something to eat, what stores are open, directions to places and what streets are closed.
"We wanted to be able to communicate with folks to be able to give them real-time updates," said Moore.
It can also provide information about upcoming events downtown.
"I think it's great, especially because I have a baby; I'm always trying to find out what's going on in the neighborhood," said Vargas.
Updates on ongoing construction are available as well, with Hello Lamp Post able to provide answers about the size, schedule and traffic disruptions from projects.
The program does not require people to download an app or fill out a form to sign up ahead of time.
People only need to scan the code, and they are ready to go.
"I think it's very useful," said George Bitetto, who works in Stamford. "If I were to come down here on a Friday night, I would definitely use it."
"It's nice to see that it's letting other people who are maybe not online all the time see what's going on," added Vargas.
Stamford Downtown says everything in the program is completely anonymous. The only data collected is about what questions people are asking, which allows them to continue making the information and answers stronger.
