Connecticut Blood Center has issued a blood emergency as the region’s inventory falls below two days.
The organization says a healthy blood supply typically ranges from five to seven days. The shortage mirrors a national decline, worsened locally by summer schedules, holiday travel and extreme heat that have reduced donations while trauma cases rise.
Officials say type O blood is in especially critical demand. Donors can schedule an appointment at ctblood.org or by calling 800-688-0900.
CTBC has also introduced a new digital registration system, which may cause slightly longer wait times during the transition.
