Flood gates to be installed to beat back storm surge from Hudson River

The plan is to install 26 floodgates throughout the city of Hoboken. They're part of a $230 million project aimed at reducing flooding in the city.

Hoboken expects to put into use floodgates to wall off the city against storm surge from the Hudson River in 2027.

News 12 got a look at two of those gates.

One is connected with Harborside Park, which is under construction in the northern section of the city.

Once completed, the gate will roll out across 15th Street and protect city streets from filling with water.

Another smaller gate will cut across Bloomfield. The bright orange gates, along with concrete flood walls, will change the way the city is impacted by heavy rain and flooding from the Hudson River.

The work is part of the Rebuild by Design project and carries a $230 million price tag - paid for by the federal government.

Two inches of rain fell in 45 minutes this past weekend. The Hoboken mayor says flood pumps kicked out 14 million gallons of water in four hours.

She say the city streets were cleared in hours as opposed to days.

“It did just that - it held a million gallons of water, and it was able to discharge that water back into the sewer system," said Mayor Emily Jabbour.
