The Westport Police Department is warning the public about several reports and official complaints about a telephone scam involving callers falsely claiming to be members of the department.

In numerous cases, callers tell victims they missed a court date or failed to appear for jury duty. They then claim the victim must take immediate action to avoid arrest.

The scammers often demand immediate payment, typically using Green Dot cards and claim the payment is required before a new court date can be scheduled.

Westport police will never call to demand payment for missing jury duty or a court appearance. Residents should never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited, unverified callers.

Police also urge residents to be cautious of anyone creating a false sense of urgency or requesting payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or other unconventional methods.

If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately.
