78-year-old Stamford woman dies after being struck by car
The driver, a 28-year-old Stamford resident who was working at the time of the accident, stayed on the scene and tried to help the woman before he called 911, according to police.

A 78-year-old Stamford woman in critical condition after police say she was struck by car Friday morning.
The woman was identified Carmen Illapa.
Police say it happened around 5:30 a.m.
Stamford Police Sgt. Jeffrey Booth says a car coming from Stillwater Avenue tried to make a left turn onto Progress Drive when it hit Illapa.
Police say that Illapa later succumbed to her injuries at Stamford Hospital on Friday afternoon.
"We are assuming she was picking up bottles and cans because we did find a large bag of bottles and cans that appeared to be fairly fresh," Booth said.
The driver, a 28-year-old Stamford resident who was working at the time of the accident, stayed on the scene and tried to help the woman before he called 911, according to police.
Police couldn't immediately identify who the woman was because she didn't have identification or a cellphone on her at the time of the accident.
Booth said there doesn't appear to be any evidence of speeding or the driver being intoxicated.
Residents said they were shocked but wished the victim a quick recovery.
"Hopefully she gets better and this doesn't happen again," said Tatiana Rice, of Stamford. "It's very unfortunate."
