A New Haven man was sentenced for a shooting in his town that left an innocent mother wounded after a bullet flew into her apartment from the street, New Haven Judicial District State’s Attorney John P. Doyle says.
Jamar Boyd, 44, will serve 20 years in prison and 10 years of parole for the shooting, which he carried out in a fit of rage after his car was towed on Aug. 25, 2024.
Prosecutors say Boyd discharged around five rounds down the street after the tow truck driver denied his demand to release the vehicle, which lacked a valid permit. Investigators say Boyd received multiple prior citations.
One bullet struck the tow truck, while another traveled into the front room of a young mother's apartment, where she was playing with her two children.
Prosecutors say the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the face. She survived the shooting but said she shares mental trauma with her kids.
According to court documents, Boyd was barred from possessing a handgun at the time of the shooting, as he was a convicted felon. Boyd served around 16 years of a 20-year sentence for shooting a man in New Haven in 2004, leaving the victim paralyzed.
He was let out on parole in 2022 and is now back behind bars for the recent act of violence.
Prosecutors say Boyd previously pleaded guilty to assault, criminal intent to commit assault and criminal possession of a firearm.
He was sentenced Thursday.
