Dozens of NICU graduates reunite with Brookdale Hospital staff

More than 50 NICU families returned to One Brooklyn Health – Brookdale Hospital on Friday to reunite with the medical staff that got them through struggle and survival.
“Every little hurdle that we get through and every milestone, it’s a celebration for us, as well,” said Ashley Lewis, a NICU nurse.
Lewis told News 12 that she was a NICU patient herself, and she has spent the last six years caring for other families.
“Seeing the babies that I helped take care of, whether they were 22 or 23 weeks and full-term, pre-term, whichever; it’s just so rewarding,” said Lewis.
Denise King credited the hospital staff for the care they gave to her three NICU babies: 10-month-old Jiraiya and 3-year-old twins, Jiniyah and Josiah.
“It shocked everybody that they were able to come home that fast,” said King. “That’s because they have the best doctors here for the children and the babies.”
Staff said they see about 400 NICU patients each year and build a bond with the families.
“This is a relationship that is created over time, sometimes difficult conversations, life-threatening circumstances, hard decisions,” said Dr. Kemi Mascoll-Robertson, the hospital's clinical medical director of neonatology. “So, it’s a really a journey.”
“We want to let them know that your journey is our journey, too,” said Lewis. “As you are praying and concerned and crying over your baby, as are we.”
The hospital also unveiled a “Legacy Wall,” which highlights personal NICU stories. Staff said it will be installed near the entrance of the NICU to inspire future families.
