Hundreds delayed after threat on Metro-North train triggers evacuation near Grand Central

A threat aboard a Metro-North train prompted an emergency response and passenger evacuation near Grand Central Terminal.
MTA police said the incident happened Wednesday aboard Train 1723, the 7:12 a.m. train from New Canaan.
As the train approached Track 110, a female passenger experienced what authorities described as an emotional crisis. A witness reported the woman said, "this will be your last day on earth."
Another passenger pulled an emergency cord after observing the woman, causing the train to stop about 100 yards short of the platform.
About 60 passengers self-evacuated the train.
Metro-North de-energized the third rail and suspended service to the lower level of Grand Central after learning passengers had entered the tracks.
MTA police officers and train crew members escorted those passengers the remaining distance to the platform.
Authorities said power was restored within 21 minutes of the start of the incident. The train was then moved to the platform, where the remaining 650 passengers exited safely.
Hannah Jane Santero, 33, of Elmhurst, was arrested, according to MTA police.
She is charged with making a terroristic threat and making a threat of mass harm, police said.
