More than 200 swimmers from around the country swam from Long Island's north shore to Bridgeport Saturday to help raise money for several southwestern Connecticut charities.
St. Vincent's Swim Across the Sound started 20 years ago with five swimmers who helped raised $5,000 for local charities. This year participants swam more than 12 miles to raise about $300,000.
Ron Bianchi, Corporate Senior Vice President for St. Vincent's Medical Center, says the money raised will help benefit 34 state and local programs.
Several hours after entering the water on Long Island's north shore, the first group of swimmers to complete the distance swam across the finish line at Bridgeport's Captain's Cove.
?The Westport Pride? team came in first place and broke the relay amateur record set last year. Team member Josh Usdavin said the team raised more than $8,000.
