Representatives from the United Nations gathered in Westport Saturday for the 60th annual jUNe Day.
The event was created by Ruth Steinkraus Cohen, who founded United Nations Association of Southwestern Connecticut (UNASWCT) to honor the work done by the UN and promote world peace, international understanding and friendship.
The organization and town officials hosted close to 300 guests.
The day featured an opening ceremony and a special message from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered by UN Under Secretary-General Christian Saunders.
Guests participated in various activities such as tennis, golf and nature walks at Earthplace. There was a walking tour of downtown and free access to Compo Beach.
"I think it's hugely important, and particularly now where we live in a very turbulent world, for communities to sit down and break bread, and to work together," said Saunders.
"They probably feel comfortable getting away from the city. Just forgetting about their main major responsibilities for a few hours and enjoy a day in the country, in a typical American town, not so typical, but an American town near New York, which is a lot different," said Bill Hass, UNASWCT president.
In honor of the day, a handful of flags from U.N. member countries flew over Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge.
