A man who was fatally shot in Bridgeport this week was remembered Friday as a great father, a son and a hardworking citizen.
Tyheem Scales, 26, was shot and killed on William Street Monday afternoon.
"A light to his family, a light to his daughter and a light to the community," said Louis Reed, Scales' cousin.
Reed says police told his family Scales was "a random victim" killed during a robbery just three minutes after arriving on William Street to visit a relative.
"There was nothing that Ty had done in order to bring this upon himself other than showing up at the wrong place at the wrong time," Reed said.
Mike Rosnick has been the family's attorney for decades and says Scales was an honor roll student at Central Magnate High School, who went on to become an entrepreneur and a proud father to his 4-year-old daughter.
"He is a warm, kind, good kid. He was a great father. His parents were proud of him. He was an only child," said Rosnick. "There is too much senseless violence in this country. There needs to be gun control, measures and reforms."
Scales lost his father to COVID-19 a year and a half ago, and his family says his mother has lost her only child now as well.
"How many families need to lose loved ones before people in power will make concrete change?" said Reed.
A scholarship fund has been set up in memory of Scales. Click here to donate.
