Nearly 600 Optimum Cable workers in Shelton and Stratford learned Tuesday that they will lose their jobs.
The employees were told that they will lose their jobs by Nov. 1.
Mayor Mark Lauretti thinks that most workers will be able to find new jobs here in Shelton.
"We have companies like United HealthCare that just moved in," he says. "Unilever is another corporation that comes to mind. Perkin Elmer, Pitney-Bowes."
An Optimum spokeswoman says the calls answered in Shelton will go to New York and New Jersey.
The cable company was recently taken over by French media conglomerate Altice, which plans to cut nearly a billion dollars in spending.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal says profits shouldn't come before people.
"I'm going to be scrutinizing these layoffs to determine whether they are fully in accordance with the law," he says.
Altice also purchased News 12 Connecticut when it took over Optimum Cable.
The company says the workers will get severance packages, and they can apply for new jobs within the company.
