Back-to-school shopping?

A weeklong sales tax holiday is right around the corner for Connecticut consumers.

"Sales Tax-Free" week starts Sunday Aug. 17 and runs until Saturday Aug. 23.

The state says retail purchases of most clothing and footwear items priced under $100 will be exempt from the Connecticut sales tax.

“Absolutely amazing," college student Leia Rivera says. "My back-to-school shopping will be done next week: shoes, clothes, everything."

Consumers aren't the only ones feeling energized.

Annette Norton, owner of Saavy + Grace in Westport, says her store sees a 20% increase in business during sales tax-free week.

“People really do come out and shop for that week," Norton says. "It’s trying things on, it’s getting service, it’s people recognizing you, and being so appreciative that you’re there."

The state is encouraging everyone to shop local because every dollar spent supports our neighborhoods and communities.

“It’s usually family-run," college student Emma Bona says, "I think it’s good to support people who actually live here and contribute to the community.”
