The suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer was in court Tuesday for the second time since his arrest.

Rex Heuermann is facing charges in the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. Their bodies were found in 2010 on a remote stretch of Gilgo Beach.

A large amount of materials was given to the defense from the prosecution as part of the discovery process - the equivalent of 2,500 pages of documents.

Defense attorney Michael Brown said that Heuermann has been contacted by his wife, who filed for divorce following his arrest. He also said that Heuermann maintains that he did not commit the murders.

“This case is a case that we're going to try in the courtroom,” Brown says. “The press has convicted my client without seeing a shred of evidence.”

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said they plan to continue to submit evidence to the defense as they continue their investigation. He says that could take a long time because there is about 13 years' worth of evidence in the case.

“You’re talking about 13 years of investigation, so suffice to say it is a massive amount of material and it is continuing,” Tierney says.

Tierney also said that some family of the Gilgo Beach victims were in court, but said they will not be making any comments to the media at this time.

Heuermann is due back in court on Sept. 27.
