Advocates for the disabled are looking at changes in how the state handles handicapped parking permits.

According to some advocates, tens of thousands of permits may be in the hands of people who don't need them. They say that is because Connecticut is one of only four states that doesn't require drivers to renew handicapped parking permits.

Fran Sinish, of the Fairfield Disability Resource Center, says many people are misusing the permits, leaving those who really need the spots out of luck. Stratford police also say because of a lack of information on the permits, it's nearly impossible to tell if they are being used in a fraudulent manner.

Advocates hope legislation that calls for the creation of a renewal process and the addition of crucial information on permits will help those in dire need of handicapped spaces. The legislation is currently before the state Transportation Committee.
