A Darien charter service is looking to offer affordable day cruises to a whole new market.

Eautha Munklewitz, the owner of Sail Naiad LLC, says people will soon be able to charter a boat from her company at an affordable price.

She says they could be used for many events, such as kids birthday parties, business meetings and romantic day cruises for one or multiple couples.

Munklewitz made her pitch to members of the Bridgeport City Council Saturday.

She says as the pandemic winds down and as people begin spending money and getting out of the house, she hopes to cash in on "the general restlessness of a COVID-weary public."

Munklewitz says no other boat service is offering low-cost cruises to people in Bridgeport.

"Buying a boat and repairing a boat is extremely expensive,” she says. “I think a lot of people connect sailing and boating with rich, snooty people, and that it's too unaffordable for them. I'm really trying to bring it to a level where people can just get on the boat and come sailing, and it's affordable for them, it's not a huge outlay of cash."

City officials say the venture could be a win for Bridgeport and Naiad Sails.

"We have to promote it. It's new business, it's local business” says Jeanette Herron, of the Bridgeport City Council.

City Councilmember Jorge Cruz adds, “This will be a great experience to get outdoors — people can start coming out because we have been basically isolated during the past year, during this pandemic."
