The driver who allegedly fatally struck a man in Trumbull and then fled the scene made his first court appearance Friday.
Ventura Mejia-Hernandez was arrested Thursday as he sat in his seat on a plane at New York's Kennedy Airport waiting to take off for El Salvador.
Mejia-Hernandez, 48, is accused of hitting John Burr, of East Norwalk, on Tuesday night on Route 8 in Trumbull. Mejia-Hernandez was charged with evading responsibility for fleeing the accident scene and for driving without a license. The state's attorney's office says manslaughter charges may follow as the investigation continues.
"The news that the driver of the car has been apprehended brings comfort to us and that it allows us to begin the process of healing," says Don Burr, the victim's brother.
The arraignment judge set bail at $125,000. Mejia-Hernandez is due back in state Superior Court on March 30.
