Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. announced Monday he will be running for Bronx borough president, becoming the only registered candidate currently on the ticket.
Diaz was surrounded by Bronx elected officials supporting his candidacy, including former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer.
However, as Diaz addressed the economy and unemployment, many Bronx residents seemed more concerned about the cost of the special election itself, especially with the assemblyman unopposed.
The cost of the impending election is an estimated $2.5 million. If Diaz is elected, he will have to run again in November, costing the borough another $2.5 million.
Despite the high cost, officials say the special election is required by law. Residents will vote for the borough president on April 21.
