The retired Yale fertility doctor who was accused of using his own sperm to inseminate patients in the 1980s has died.

Dr. Burton Caldwell's attorney confirmed his passing in a court filing, but the impact on the ongoing lawsuits against him remains unclear.

Caldwell faced multiple claims from children who discovered their biological father's identity through home DNA testing.

At least two dozen individuals have come forward, though the actual number of children he fathered remains unknown.

Many impacted families have roots in the New Haven area, where Caldwell practiced.

Caldwell had not held a medical license since 2005.
