The Connecticut Audubon Society says it is working to protect and track a rare bird species in the area.
The Coastal Center at Milford Point is home to a colony of purple martins. The species is the largest member of the swallow family in the country, according to the Audubon Society.
Each baby bird on Wednesday got silver and yellow bands with a nine-digit number on it. The yellow band means the bird came from Milford.
Officials say there are now more than 20 colonies in the state, but that number was down to five at one point.
News 12 is told the first eggs started hatching about 20 days ago. Baby martins begin flying at around 28 days old.
