New Haven is honoring the Black Lives Matter movement through art, with the first in a series of murals painted Saturday on Bassett Street between Dixwell Avenue and Watson Street.
The painting event also featured vendors and open mic performances. Shirley Lawrence, who lives on Bassett Street, says she is inspired by the mural.
The project is sponsored by the city and its Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs, Black Lives Matter New Haven, community groups and private donors.
