A barricaded suspect involved in a daylong standoff with
police in Branford was found deceased inside a building, Branford police
announced on their Facebook page.
In a tweet sent out by Connecticut State Police, they said
the area around Main Street and Cherry Hill Road was “clear” and there was “no
further threat to the public.”
Branford police received reports of shots fired in that
area around noon. Police say responding officers encountered “heavy gunfire”
coming from the upper floors of a business or apartment building.
Police say officers continued to face heavy gunfire and
were pinned down until armored BearCat vehicles arrived.
One person with gunshot wounds was transported to the
hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The South Central SWAT team was working toward a peaceful
resolution late in the afternoon.
Details surrounding the suspect's motive, identity or
cause of death were not yet released.
The incident prompted authorities to shut down I-95
at Exit 53. It has since reopened.
