Tweed New Haven is adding an additional airline for customers more than six months after gaining approval to expand the airport.
Breeze Airways announced Tuesday it will join Avelo Airlines on the New Haven runway, and start service by the end of the year.
"This is what winning looks like," said incoming chairman of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority Robert Reed said. "And it's only going to get better."
Starting in November, Breeze will start to roll out non-stop flights to nearly a dozen destinations like Fort Myers, Florida, Charleston, South Carolina, Richmond, Virginia and more.
Back in December, Tweed received approval from the FAA to lengthen the runway and build a new 75,000 square- foot terminal.
While Reed says it adds to the momentum of making Tweed a central economic and strategic driver for the region, some have expressed concerns with the airport’s plans to expand.
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker says Breeze airplanes are quieter and scheduled flights will depart no earlier than 7 a.m. and arrive no later than 10 p.m.
The new terminal will be elevated to avoid flooding and have plenty of parking.
