With just a week until school starts in Bridgeport, hundreds of students are facing the reality that buses will no longer be giving them a ride.
The Bridgeport Board of Education voted this week to expand the minimum walking distance for elementary school students.
Students who live within 1.5 miles from their school will soon have to walk instead of taking the bus.
The move is expected to save more than $1.6 million, which will be used to prevent 47 kindergarten aides from being laid off.
The school board says it will take about a month to draw up new bus routes.
