A Bridgeport family is upset that they must live in two separate homes due to what they call a lack of wheelchair-accessible apartments designed for families.
Willie Thomas, who is disabled, lives on one side of Bridgeport in a wheelchair-accessible apartment designed for one person. His wife Stephanie lives on the other side of Bridgeport with their 8-year-old son. Both homes are publicly funded.
The family says the problem is that there are not enough wheelchair-accessible apartments available that are designed to accommodate families. They say it makes no sense that taxpayers are paying for one family to live in two locations.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal says the situation is totally unacceptable. He says he will be looking at the situation to determine what can be done to stop the hardship for the family as well as the waste of taxpayer funds that may be involved.
Federal housing officials did not return calls for comment.
