A Bridgeport woman says her and her daughter will not be celebrating Christmas this year because they will be homeless as of Sunday.
Lora Weeks and her 23-year-old daughter Ruth, who has special needs, have been staying in a motel room in Stratford for the past several days. They say as of 11 a.m. Sunday, they will be evicted from the motel.
Weeks says she and Ruth have been homeless for the past eight months ever since Weeks lost her job and they got evicted from their apartment.
Weeks says she cannot work because Ruth requires constant one-on-one care. Ruth receives a disability check of $700 every month.
The local nonprofit group Needs Clearing House put the two women up in a motel room for several days, Weeks says. But their time will be up on Sunday.
The Bridgeport Rescue Mission says it has seen an increase this year in the number of special needs adults like Ruth who have become homeless. However, like most shelters, officials with the mission say they simply do not have the resources to accommodate people with severe disabilities.
