The Bridgeport Fire Department has relaunched its free smoke alarm program after it was put on hold due to the pandemic.
The program provides free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for Bridgeport residents.
Officials say there are 5,000 detectors available for installation.
The installation is available for single family homes, duplexes, and multifamily homes as long as one portion of the house is owner-occupied, officials say.
The fire department's new acting Chief Lance Edwards says the program was put on hold during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Firefighters will install the detectors inside residents’ homes for free as part of the city program.
Edwards says the city has installed 75,000 smoke alarms over the program's 16 years and has helped alert at least 100 people about fires in their homes.
Officials say the smoke alarm program is made possible through a grant provided by Housing and Urban Development.
