Area homeless shelters are expecting to see more people this weekend with a frigid weekend ahead.
"Everybody deserves a home," said Carmen Colon with the Bridgeport YMCA.
With temperatures expected to drop into the single digits, the Bridgeport YMCA is preparing to see new faces this weekend.
"Immediately we got on Zoom meetings with our network, which is opening doors in Fairfield County to make sure that we were all prepared. If we needed additional cots, we got those from the city of Bridgeport," said Colon.
The Y has 30 beds, which some people are already using. Staff is preparing food.
"We have staff that really cares about the population that we serve, and they will not leave anyone outside in the cold," said Colon.
"The work that we do every day is lifesaving," said Cheryl Bell with Recovering Network of Programs.
Recovering Network of Programs works with the YMCA and says no one will be turned away this weekend.
"They'll be able to sleep, have a warm meal and also to provide them with some services," said Bell.
The YMCA says it has other locations around the city if homeless people can't find a bed there.
The Y's main objective is to find permanent housing for everyone who comes there.
Homeless shelters are asking the state to provide more money to keep them operating. There is a legislative hearing Thursday on a new bill.
