As the Memorial Day holiday weekend approaches a local doctor wants to remind people to stay safe.

A lot of these tips may sound familiar but they are always worth repeating.

Like watch young kids around a pool.

And be careful with fireworks -- even sparklers can be dangerous.

If you're going to be out on a boat on Long Island Sound make sure you wear a life jacket and be careful about excessive drinking or drug use on the water.

And the sun is stronger now, so make sure you put on some sun block.

Dr. Justin Cahill with Emergency Medicine at Bridgeport Hospital says the summer months can be a busy time in the emergency room.

"We see more traumatic injuries over the holidays or the summer months. Mostly from injuries that happen from falls or falling off our bicycle let's say or just being outside playing and falling. Ther's many injuries you can get. Or at the beach just walking bare foot. People get injuries from shells or sharp rocks on their feet, and we can often see injuries from that," said Cahill.
