A Bridgeport family is grieving following the tragic death of a 46-year-old family member over an alleged $2 debt.
Gerson Chiluisa, a University of Bridgeport graduate, died after he was fatally punched in the head.
Chiluisa died one week later after he was airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital.
Police say the suspect is 31-year-old Antwan Strickland, of Hartford.
"You took a life away from a family that cared about him so much," said Gerson Chiluisa Jr., the victim’s son.
"The front part of his brain was completely damaged," said Jorge Chiluisa, the victim’s brother.
The family told News 12 they were forced to take him off life support on Tuesday.
Police say the deadly assault took place at a rehab facility in Groton.
The family said Chiluisa was battling with alcoholism and had checked himself into the facility voluntarily.
What the family didn’t expect was for their loved one to be fatally attacked by Strickland, who they say was also a patient there and was subsequently arrested.
The family says the reason for the attack stems from a $2 debt, the balance owed on a coat they say Strickland had sold him.
“It breaks, it breaks, it breaks all of our hearts,” Chiluisa’s brother said. “This person was very violent and volatile."
His brother says Strickland had already had an altercation with somebody else.
"Yo quiero justicia para my hijo, por favor," Chiluisa’s mother cried.
The victim’s mother cry in Spanish begs for justice for her son.
The family said Chiluisa had their full support when he checked into rehab, they also said Chiluisa was ready to go back
Police say Strickland is being held on a $750,000 bond.
News 12 reached out to the rehab center for comment but has not yet heard back.
