A Bridgeport man in need of a kidney transplant is reaching out to the public.
Jose Ortiz was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease after a routine physical more than a year ago, according to the Facebook page "Let's Get Jose a New Kidney." The youth minister and chaplain has been on dialysis and a waiting list ever since.
Mayor Bill Finch, along with other chaplains, were at Ortiz's home Thursday to celebrate his work and dedication to helping others. Finch gave him a citation and proclaimed March 26 "Jose Ortiz Day."
Ortiz and his family are asking anyone who is healthy and has an O blood type to please step forward.
If you or someone you know is interested in seeing if they are a match, the Ortiz family asks that you reach out to Yale-New Haven Hospital and let them know you are interested in helping.
