Henry Timberlake, of Bridgeport, is spending his 59th birthday in the same hospital where he was born in 1963.
"Right in this hospital," said Timberlake.
Someone dropped off a birthday cake, but Timberlake says he is not in the mood to celebrate after breaking his arm, wrist, leg, knee and several other bones as well as sustaining other internal injuries.
Timberlake was struck by a hit-and-run driver 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Washington and Highland avenues in the Hollow section of Bridgeport.
"I'm standing in the middle of the crosswalk and a car just came out of nowhere and hit me with his lights off," he said. "I went up in the air, and the next thing I know I was on the ground."
Timberlake says he was crossing Washington Avenue, heading toward Highland when the impact occurred - with the hit-and-run driver going south toward the Route 8/25 on-ramp. Police say the involved vehicle was a blue Mazda.
Police say they're examining surveillance video in an effort to identify the driver.
Timberlake is a well-known Bridgeport resident who's appeared many times over the years on News 12 Connecticut, including when Lafayette Street and South Frontage Road were redesignated in memory of his mother.
Timberlake says he's very lucky not to have lost his life. He says while he's had better birthdays, he hopes the hit-and-run driver will do the right thing and surrender to police.
"I'm laying here with 20 broken ribs, in pain, and I have surgery tomorrow," said Timberlake.
Anyone who has information on the crash is asked to call 203-576-TIPS.
