Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim says he's "grateful" United Illuminating's plan to build a 145-foot-tall high-voltage power line will not be coming to Bridgeport and Fairfield.

Ganim thanked a Superior Court judge for overturning a decision by the Connecticut Siting Council to place the poles along Metro-North rail lines.

The Connecticut Siting Council had approved the 7-mile project, stretching from Southport to Bridgeport along the north side of the railroad tracks and Post Road.

The city of Fairfield, joined by other plaintiffs, sued the Connecticut Siting Council challenging the approval process.

United Illuminating Statement:

“Transmission line development is crucial for ensuring grid safety and stability regionally, enhancing grid reliability to prevent outages locally and ensuring communities, like Fairfield and Bridgeport, have the electricity they need to power their growing economies. Connecticut’s energy needs continue to grow, and after years of delays, the fundamental purpose of this project remains unchanged."
