Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim and other officials unveiled a plan Thursday to combat rising violent crime in the city.

There were three homicides reported in the city last weekend.

Thursday morning, Ganim visited the family of Chaz Rogers, who was fatally shot Friday on Trumbull Avenue, when gunfire erupted in the area. The mayor said at a news conference in the afternoon that he was in the vicinity and heard the shots, but he didn't provide further details. He says the violence needs to stop.

"I am not happy or satisfied with one shooting in our city," he said. "One shooting's too many."

Also Thursday, the city swore in 24 new police officers at Klein Memorial Auditorium. Ganim says 29 more officers are currently in the police academy.

Ganim and Police Chief AJ Perez say the recruits will eventually be focusing on areas where there has been more violence.

There have been a total of 16 homicides in Bridgeport this year.
