Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim is urging residents to check in on seniors and people with disabilities as below-zero temperatures impact the region this weekend.

Ganim said on Saturday that a search is underway for the family of a man who died from the extreme cold last week.

"It's a very sad situation, but the Bridgeport Rescue Mission and other facilities are available. Warming centers are open in the city. We want people to be safe. Get through this next week or two of some of the coldest weather we've seen in decades," Ganim stressed.

He added that warming centers will remain open for the duration of this cold weather around the clock.
