Bridgeport Councilman Jorge Cruz is calling on the community to rally around the family of a 4-year-old girl who is in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital.
The child was struck by a police cruiser traveling to an emergency call at Went Field Park, in the district Cruz represents.
"We need to let this family know they are not alone at this difficult hour, that the entire city is sending them our love and support," he says.
The crash happened Wednesday just after 9:30 p.m. on Hanover Street, just steps from the 4-year-old's home.
The Bridgeport Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team and the Southern Fairfield County Traffic Unit are investigating the crash.
According to police, Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter visited the girl at the hospital.
"I am praying for the child's full recovery," said Porter. "The department's thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. There will be a fully transparent, independent investigation."
The officer's identity - and if they will face disciplinary action - was not immediately known.
Officials ask anyone with information about the incident to call the Bridgeport Police tips line at: 203- 576-TIPS.
