Bridgeport officials have agreed to meet some of the demands of protesters who camped out in front of the police department.
City Council President Aidee Nieves tells News 12 Connecticut that the council Is working on a resolution to divert millions of dollars away from the Bridgeport Police Department like other municipalities have done with their law enforcement agencies.
The money will then be reallocated to train social workers and invest in other changes that will make, "an impactful difference in preventing police brutality and other abuses against people of color."
Community activist Joe Grits says he was recently the victim of excessive force by law enforcement, though not in Bridgeport. He says he's encouraged by the progress that's being made.
The protest was organized by Justice For Jayson formed in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Jayson Negron. The Bridgeport police officer who killed Negron was eventually cleared of wrongdoing.
Members say that all these cases stem from the same problem. They say their message has been sent, and they're getting results by standing together under a single tent.
