Police in Bridgeport are asking for the public's help tracking down whoever shot a 15-year-old boy as he sat on his front porch Tuesday night.
Police say the victim was an innocent bystander wounded in a drive-by shooting after 8 p.m. near his home at 979 Maplewood Ave.
A bullet struck the teen's arm, and doctors say the injury could have been fatal if the bullet landed either an inch higher or lower.
Police say the victim heard several shots ring out, then noticed he had been struck in the right forearm.
Police say there was at least one witness who saw a gunman open fire, and investigators are in the process of looking at surveillance video from the neighborhood.
"Depending on the angle of that bullet, it could have entered his chest and killed him, definitely," says Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez. "A very close call. It's incredible that somebody would do this to a young person. It was a very scary thing to find out."
According to police, the victim told investigators he did not see anything suspicious before or after the shooting. The person who answered the door at the teen's house said he was still recovering and not available for comment. Due to his age, police are not releasing his name.
Kingsley Osei of Connecticut Against Violence says his nonprofit group will hold a back-to-school youth summit Friday at Housatonic Community College to address gun violence.
