Bridgeport PD: Shooting victim crashes into ambulance; crew saves his life
Police in Bridgeport say a man believed to be driving himself to the hospital after being shot crashed into an ambulance Wednesday night and that the series of events may have saved his life.
Authorities say 30-year-old Stephen Taylor, of Bridgeport, crashed into an ambulance at 8 p.m. on Wednesday near Barnum and Central avenues.
According to police, Taylor was shot inside his car while he had been driving on Hollister Ave. They say once he realized what happened he headed to the hospital, in spite of being critically wounded.
Police say when Taylor crashed into the ambulance he had already blacked out from losing to much blood.
Authorities say the first responders who were in the ambulance saw that the driver had been shot and needed immediate life-saving medical care.
"They recognized that the individual had gone into cardiac arrest, they started CPR immediately," says Police Chief AJ Perez.
Officials say Taylor is in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital but is expected to survive. The details of the shooting are still unclear.
