As relief efforts continue in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria's devastation, people in Bridgeport are doing what they can to help.
People have been dropping off donations all week at El Flamboyan Restaurant and Bar on East Main Street.
It all started with a group of around eight people who wanted to help, but organizers say now there's around 100 people stepping in.
It’s not just folks from the city's Puerto Rican community, but the entire Hispanic community as well, and even people from other cities and towns.
By Monday, the group Unidos por el Mundo already had a trailer full of supplies. It also collected dozens of water bottles yesterday.
The group is asking for first aid kits, non-perishable food items, mosquito repellent, diapers, toiletries and money.
Donations will now be collected for the next few weeks outside the restaurant.
Meantime, cities and towns across Connecticut say they're expecting an influx of hundreds, maybe thousands, of people from the island.
According to Mayor Joe Ganim, the city could see the biggest impact in its schools, with possibly 200 to 300 children looking to integrate into the school system.
While Ganim says there's challenges to be faced, he says the city is ready to show support.
“They'll rely mostly on families but as an entity we want to be warm, we want to be receptive, we want to be supportive,” says Ganim.
The city has already organized several relief efforts.
Optimus Health Care, which is across the street from the restaurant, is collaborating with donation collections
There will be an upcoming fundraiser over the weekend.
