An 11-year-old girl returned home safely Thursday after a school suspension prompted her to run away.
School officials admit some administrators didn't follow proper suspension procedures when dealing with Dorothy Jules, a student at E. Blackham Elementary. Jules didn't return home at her usual time Wednesday afternoon. After the school gave her a letter about the suspension to deliver to her mother, the girl ran away.
Jules' mother, Judy Faustin, grew worried when her daughter didn't come home. She says she didn't learn of the suspension until she called the school in an attempt to locate her daughter. Jules was accused of hitting a fellow student, which she denies.
The district acknowledges some Blackham staff members made errors in the case. However, district representatives say the problems are being addressed.
